After several quarters of Apple's dominance, Samsung has once again moved back to the top spot in terms of smartphone shipments globally. In the first quarter of 2025, the Korean company shipped 60.5 million devices, taking 20 per cent of the global market, while Apple shipped 55 million (19 per cent).

Here's What We Know

Samsung's success is attributed to the successful launch of its flagship Galaxy S25 series and the growing popularity of its new A-series models. The company performed particularly well in the US and European markets, where its share reached 36% and 34% respectively.

Apple, although showing a 13% year-on-year growth, faced problems in China - there, its share of Americans fell to 13.7%, losing ground to Xiaomi. The company is also under pressure due to delays in its AI strategy and the possible impact of new duties in the US.

Overall, the global smartphone market grew by just 0.2% in the first quarter of 2025, suggesting saturation and consumer caution.

Thus, Samsung has managed to seize the moment and regain its leadership in the smartphone market - although competition remains fierce and the situation could change as early as next quarter.
