People are queuing up to spend €155,000 on the Renault 5 Turbo 3E
Despite the staggering €155,000 price tag, the Renault 5 Turbo 3E is selling like hotcakes: in the first week after the launch, the company collected 850 applications - almost half of the limited edition of 1,980 units.
Here's What We Know
Renault announced in April that the R5 Turbo 3E electric car, created in honour of the iconic 5 Turbo, would cost €155,000. The idea of an electric hot-hatch more expensive than the new Porsche 911 GTS might have seemed dodgy, but demand has proved strong.
At a recent general meeting of shareholders in France, Renault shared some interesting news: in just a week since orders opened, the company has received 850 applications for the R5 Turbo 3E out of a planned 1,980 cars worldwide. And placing an order is not just a matter of calling a dealer. To get in line, potential buyers must pay a non-refundable deposit of €45,000. Thus, Renault has already raised €38.25 million, which will be used to finalise the model's development.
The R5 Turbo 3E has a lightweight carbon fibre body, 800-volt architecture and is equipped with two electric motors on the rear axle. Their combined output is 540bhp, which is enough to propel the compact hatchback from a standing start to 100km/h in just 3.5 seconds.
The car comes with a 70 kW∙h battery that provides a range of over 400 kilometres. Fast charging allows you to replenish the level from 15 to 80 per cent in just 15 minutes. So despite the high price tag, buyers get a decent level of performance in return.
