At The Android Show: I/O Edition, Google officially unveiled Material 3 Expressive, a new Android visual design that will arrive later this year alongside the release of Android 16.

Here's What We Know

Material 3 Expressive will make the interface more dynamic, intuitive and, as the developer claims, "emotional".

Google will not only redesign the interface, but will also add "spring animations" that will make interactions feel smoother and more natural. For example, users will feel a slight vibration and tactile feedback when adjusting the volume slider or screen brightness.

The Dynamic Colour System will offer richer and more expressive palettes, and headings and key interface elements will be larger and more readable.

App developers have 35 new shape options to create a variety of interfaces.

At first, Material 3 Expressive will only appear in Pixel smartphones and tablets, as well as the Pixel Watch - Wear OS 6 will receive a corresponding update. The interface will be adapted to the round display, and animations will follow the curves of the screen.

In general, with the new design, interface elements will become more rounded, and the size of many of them will be customisable.
