Shadows has taught us a lot: Ubisoft postpones several large-scale projects to improve the quality of releases
Ubisoft has announced the postponement of several of its biggest games, including Assassin's Creed, Far Cry, Rainbow Six, The Division, and Ghost Recon. The company aims to provide developers with more time for refinement to ensure the best possible gaming experience, even if it means delaying the launch by a year or more.
Here's What We Know
During the latest financial report, Ubisoft confirmed that after a thorough review of development plans, it was decided to extend the development time for several key projects. CEO Yves Guillemot noted that the delay of Assassin's Creed Shadows was "the right decision to ensure high quality", and other major titles will be released after the end of the current fiscal year, i.e. not earlier than April 2026, and possibly later - in 2027 or 2028.
Despite the postponement, Ubisoft continues to be active this year. The company plans to release Anno 117: Pax Romana, the long-awaited re-release of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, a mobile version of Rainbow Six Mobile, and a spin-off of The Division: Resurgence. Also in 2025, the first major expansion for Assassin's Creed Shadows will be released, and in June, a large-scale X update for Rainbow Six Siege.
Ubisoft also announced plans to create a new division in partnership with the Chinese giant Tencent. This team will focus on the development of its three main franchises - Assassin's Creed, Rainbow Six and Far Cry - with a focus on improving single-player games, expanding gaming services and entering mobile platforms and markets in China.
At the end of the fiscal year, Ubisoft generated revenue of €1.85 billion, slightly below expectations due to delays in partnership projects. At the same time, Assassin's Creed Shadows Assassin's Creed Shadows became Ubisoft's most successful release in recent years: the game surpassed Odyssey and set new records racking up more than 160 million hours of gameplay and retaining around 3 million players shortly after release. In total, Assassin's Creed and Rainbow Six have 30 million unique players each, and Far Cry has around 20 million.
The company continues to optimise costs: the number of employees has decreased by 3,000 to 17,782, and an additional €100 million in cost savings is planned for the next two years.
