Hideo Kojima, the legendary creator of Death Stranding and Metal Gear Solid, is known for his games that explore possible scenarios for our collective future. However, recent events have forced the game director to think more deeply about his own future and the fate of Kojima Productions after his death.

Here's What We Know

In an interview with Edge Magazine, Kojima said that a serious illness during the pandemic prompted him to reassess his career ambitions and the amount of time he had left as a creator. After recovering, the Death Stranding 2 director decided to give his personal assistant a "USB drive with all his ideas" to provide the studio with new ideas after he left. Kojima likened this medium to a kind of "will".

"Maybe they'll be able to continue creating things at Kojima Productions after I'm gone... That's my fear: what will happen to Kojima Productions after I die? I don't want them to just manage our existing IPs," Kojima said.

The game director, who will turn 62 in August, noted that the pandemic was a more important turning point for him than turning 60. After an illness and eye surgery, he lost the ability to "create something". At the same time, he witnessed "the death of many people around him".

"Until then, I didn't think of myself as old, you know? I just didn't feel my age and assumed I could create as long as I lived," said Kojima, "but then I got sick and couldn't create anything. And I saw many people around me dying at that time. I was faced with death. Of course, I recovered, but now I was thinking: "Wait, how many years do I have left to make a game or a film? Maybe 10 years?"

Kojima Productions' next game, Death Stranding 2: On The Beach, will be released on 26 June exclusively on PlayStation 5.
