The resounding success of Helldivers 2 did not tie the developers to Sony: Arrowhead is financing its next project on its own
The collaboration between Arrowhead Studios and PlayStation has become a real triumph thanks to the phenomenal success of Helldivers 2. However, as it became known, the Swedish studio decided to go its own way and finance its next game independently, without direct involvement of Sony. This news was announced by Arrowhead CEO Shams Georgiani in his Discord message, as quoted by Forbes. According to him, the studio's next project is "100% self-funded," which will allow Arrowhead to fully control all key decisions regarding the game.
Here's What We Know
It is important to note that Arrowhead's decision to part ways with PlayStation in its next project is not related to any problems in the relationship between the companies. Giorgiani emphasised that the PlayStation team is "great" and that without their support, Helldivers 2 would never have seen the light of day.
"We are open to working with them again in the future. They are incredibly focused on games and developers. They are reliable partners. And I just say it like it is. No unnecessary compliments," he assured.
The upcoming project will be the sixth game in the Swedish studio's portfolio, following Magicka (2011), The Showdown Effect (2013), Gauntlet (2014), Helldivers (2015), and Helldivers 2 (2024). It was Helldivers 2 that became Arrowhead's biggest commercial success to date, ranking third among the best-selling games of 2024 in the United States. It is also worth mentioning that the Helldivers IP is owned by Sony, so if Arrowhead decides not to continue the series, PlayStation can entrust its development to another studio.
Earlier this year, Arrowhead confirmed that it was working on a new game. The development of a new mystery project will take place in parallel with the continued support of Helldivers 2 with fresh content.
