Former PlayStation top manager Shuhei Yoshida believes that even with the price increase to $70 and $80, modern games remain one of the most profitable entertainments on the market. He stated this during a speech at Gamescom LATAM, commenting on the new pricing policy of gaming giants.

Here's What We Know

During an interview with Critical Hit Games, Yoshida emphasised that the cost of a game should be determined by its value and the scale of the budget: "Every game has its own unique value. I believe that it is up to the publisher or independent developer to decide what price to set according to the value they offer to players."

He cited the recent success of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, which at $50 was able to attract players due to the high quality and production of more expensive releases.

Yoshida also emphasised that even $70 or $80 for a top game is a "real bargain" when compared to the cost of other entertainment: "I'm sure that for the hours of fun that the best games provide, the price is well worth it."

However, in today's world, where there are many free-to-play projects, it is becoming increasingly difficult to justify price increases. Players are increasingly comparing the cost of premium games with free-to-play alternatives, and this could affect the market in the coming years.

It will be particularly interesting to see how the new pricing policy will affect gamers' choices and publishers' strategies, as Microsoft and Nintendo have already announced price increases for some of their games up to $80.
