Players who were hoping for support for Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) in both the Nintendo Switch 2's handheld and docked modes may be disappointed. Nintendo has officially apologised for the mistake in its previous advertising for the console and clarified that VRR will only be available when using Switch 2 as a handheld.

Here's What We Know

Variable Refresh Rate is a great technology that significantly improves image quality. It dynamically synchronises the refresh rate of your TV screen with the frame rate of the game, providing a smoother picture and reducing lag and frame tearing. Switch 2 has this useful feature, but unfortunately, its use is limited.

As a reminder, Nintendo Switch 2 was originally positioned as a console with VRR support, as well as the ability to display images at up to 120 frames per second and in 4K HDR format. However, attentive players have noticed that VRR mentions in marketing materials have become much less frequent. Although the feature has not completely disappeared, its scope has changed - now Switch 2 is advertised as a console that supports VRR exclusively in portable mode.

Nintendo commented to Nintendo Life on this situation: "Nintendo Switch 2 only supports VRR in portable mode. Incorrect information was originally published on the Nintendo Switch 2 website, and we apologise for this error."

So now you don't have to buy a TV or monitor with VRR just for Switch 2, but PlayStation 5/Pro and Xbox Series do have this feature.
