Japan orders a new batch of its Type 10 tanks from Mitsubishi

The Japanese Ministry of Defence has signed a contract with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries for the production of 10 new Type 10 tanks.

Here's What We Know

The contract was signed on 27 March 2025 and is worth $102 million. The order is exclusively for the production of these combat vehicles. According to the Ministry of Defence's plans, 2 more tanks will be ordered in 2025, bringing the total number to 12 units.

The cost of one Type 10 tank as of 2022 was $9.5 million, excluding logistics and support. A total of $146 million is envisaged for the purchase of 12 tanks together with a support package.

So far, 148 Type 10 tanks out of the planned 300 have been ordered and received from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. Production will continue until at least 2032.

The Type 10 tank is Japan's fourth-generation main battle tank, which was put into service in 2012.
