The bloody and brutal Doom: The Dark Ages finally broke free in May. But on PC, the new Doom failed to repeat the resounding success of its predecessors.

Here's What We Know

Critics greeted Doom: The Dark Ages was received quite warmly by critics. Player reviews on Steam are also mostly positive. It would seem that everything is fine, but there is one disturbing detail: online gaming on PC is not the highest.

This is especially noticeable at the start of sales. The launch of The Dark Ages was much quieter than that of Doom Eternal (although the pandemic certainly played a big factor here), and even somewhat more modest than the 2016 Doom relaunch.

The number of players on Steam was quite low at the start, and many hoped for an increase over the weekend. Unfortunately, this did not happen. At the time of writing, The Dark Ages' peak online presence on Steam was only 31,470 players (according to SteamDB). This is significantly lower than Doom Eternal's peak of 104,891 players and even Doom 2016 with its 44,271 players.

Of course, Steam's statistics do not include players on other PC platforms such as Game Pass and the Microsoft Store. It also says nothing about the success of a launch on PlayStation or Xbox. It's possible that the total number of players is comparable to previous instalments, but this time they are simply distributed differently across platforms and we have no way of tracking this.

However, judging only by the Steam figures, the game's sales picture doesn't look too cheerful. Probably, the price tag and the saturation of releases such as Expediticon 33 and Oblivion Remastered made many people postpone Doom.
