A family heirloom with a tragic story: The Last of Us 2 episode 6 reveals the unexpected origin of Joel's watch
We have spoilers for the sixth episode of The Last of Us season two!
The sixth episode of The Last of Us season two was full of flashbacks, but one of them took us much further back in time than the others. The series begins in 1983, when Joel and Tommy are still teenagers. Joel is trying to shield Tommy from getting into trouble because of his father, and this leads to a conversation between Joel and his father at the kitchen table.
Here's What We Know
And then attentive fans noticed an incredible detail that is being discussed on Reddit: Joel's father is wearing the same watch that his late daughter Sarah repairs and gives him in the first episode of the series, and which Joel wears throughout the story. "It looks like a family heirloom," said one viewer.
During the flashback, Joel's father tells his son about his own father's cruelty and expresses the hope that if Joel ever has children, he can be a little better father than he was. In the final flashback of the episode, when Ellie confronts Joel on the porch on New Year's Eve about what really happened to the Fireflies at the end of season one, Joel says a very similar line to her.
This moment adds another layer of tragedy to the story of Joel and his relationship with his loved ones, making an ordinary watch a symbol of family ties, loss and hope for a better future, even in a post-apocalyptic world.
As a reminder, the Marvel and Better Call Saul star has a cameo in the post-apocalyptic drama The Last of Us, and the trailer for episode 7 of The Last of Us promises to Gunfights, explosions, and emotional breakdowns: The Last of Us episode 7 trailer promises to be the most dynamic of the season
