We have spoilers for the sixth episode of The Last of Us season two!

The sixth episode of the second season of The Last of Us gave viewers one of the most poignant and painful scenes of the series. Showrunner Craig Mazin told us about the backstage of this touching moment that will be remembered for a long time.

Here's What We Know

In episode 6, set in the past, we see an unforgettable conversation between Ellie and Joel on the porch. In this tense scene, Ellie demands that Joel confirm her suspicions about what really happened in Salt Lake City.

Ellie asks Joel to confirm that he killed many people in the hospital, including Marlene, and that the doctors could have created a cure for the fungal infection. Joel confirms all of this, tearfully, and Ellie is extremely upset with him, partly because she says that dying to create a cure would have given her life meaning.

"It was an interesting scene because there was one magical take where we thought: "Let's just let them give it their all," Maisin told Collider. "Usually when you shoot scenes like that, you try to hold back the actors because you don't want it to be too pathetic. But Bella and Pedro don't have that mode. Their natural mode is to play with restraint, in a very real, cool way. It's very rare to see them open up so much. We decided: "This would be the time to do it, if we're going to do it, and if it goes too far, then let it." But it destroyed us, all of us."

Filming this scene was particularly challenging, according to Maisin, as Ramsay and Pascal are close friends and "take good care of each other".

"It's a very emotionally draining job, but it really comes down to a lot of days and time. You spend so much time with someone and they just start to rely on each other and love each other. When you feel the goodbye coming, it just gets into your bones," said Maisin.

Meisin noted that series like The Last of Us, where two characters are so strongly connected, don't come along often. Maisin said that this feeling was palpable on set.

"That kind of experience doesn't happen often. Sometimes it catches up with you when you're over 40, and sometimes when you're a teenager. It's hard to say how the world works, but for both of them, they were living through this pretty crazy cultural moment with this series, and you could feel it," he said.

The second season of The Last of Us ends this Sunday, 25 May. A third season has already been confirmed, and Maisin said in an interview with Collider that the team will need a fourth season to complete the story.
