Showrunner Craig Mazin has confirmed that the team is working on a four-season plan, insisting that there is "no way" to complete the story in three seasons. This isn't the first time the magic number four has come up in conversations about a TV adaptation of The Last of Us. Maisin started these conversations back in 2023, suggesting that the show could "end up being three or five seasons long".

Here's What We Know

Earlier this year, HBO CEO Francesca Orci echoed these comments, saying that the adaptation "looks like four seasons" but stressed that HBO does not have a "complete or definitive plan". Instead, she seemed to be relying on Maisin, adding, "I wouldn't want to confirm it, but it looks like this season and then two more seasons after that, and we're done."

And now Maison has spoken about it again in an interview with Collider.

"There's a good chance that season three will be longer than season two," he explained, "simply because the nature of the story and the opportunities it presents us are a little different... but there's certainly no way to wrap up that story in season three. Hopefully, we'll make enough money to come back and finish it in season four. That's the most likely outcome."

As for the second season, after the sixth episode, there is only one more to go, and then only to wait for the sequel, which will probably drag on for more than one year.
