Phenomenal comeback: Star Wars Battlefront 2 is back at the peak of popularity after Andor's finale
After the end of the second season of Andor, it became clear that Star Wars fans are hungry for more. Thousands of players around the world rushed to the old but beloved game, and the number of players in Star Wars Battlefront 2 (2017) is growing rapidly again. The story of Cassian Andor, which culminated in the second season of the Rogue One prequel on Disney+, is widely considered not only one of the best works in the Star Wars universe, but also one of the best television works ever.
Here's What We Know
That's why viewers are actively looking for new Star Wars content to keep the spark of the rebellion alive. Video games have become one of the ways. EA's 2017 release, Star Wars Battlefront 2, is experiencing an unexpected surge in popularity after the series finale. Every day, more and more players are logging into the game, reaching almost record levels on Steam.
Battlefront 2 (not to be confused with the 2005 game of the same name) has been gradually growing its audience since the second season of Andor was released on Disney+. Now, as of May 2025, EA's game has recorded the highest number of simultaneous players since January 2021.
Nearly 8,000 players simultaneously took part in the battles of this now eight-year-old game (and that's just on PC). This is the second largest surge in the number of players the game has ever seen. At least, this is true on Steam. It's worth remembering that the game was originally released on EA's own Origin platform, and the Steam port came years later. This means that Steam data did not take into account the entire PC player base at launch, which was undoubtedly much larger than what we see now.
In addition, Battlefront 2 has also risen in the Xbox charts, becoming the 22nd most popular game on the platform, ahead of titles such as Halo, Destiny and Forza. This is a remarkable surge in activity, especially considering that EA hasn't released an update in five years.
Within a month of its release in November 2017, Battlefront 2 sold nine million copies. However, this was not enough for the publisher, as EA declared the game a failure, failing to reach the goal of 10 million copies sold in the same period.
At launch, the game was plunged into scandals due to its in-game economy and reliance on loot boxes for character progression.
Eventually, all microtransactions were frozen, and the developers continued to work on new free content. Now, so many years later, with the game in a much better state, it attracts thousands of players to enjoy Star Wars multiplayer in what is arguably the best way available today.
