The 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles will feature aerial taxis
US company Archer Aviation, backed by automotive group Stellantis, will be the official aerial taxi operator for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Los Angeles.
Here's What We Know
Archer will deploy a fleet of its electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) vehicles called Midnight in Los Angeles. They will transport VIP guests, members of the US national team and some lucky spectators between key competition venues. With congested metropolitan roads - especially during the Olympics - air transport promises to be a real lifesaver.
"We want to transform the way people get around Los Angeles and leave a legacy that shapes the future of transportation in America. There's no better time to do that than during the LA28 Games" said Adam Goldstein, CEO and founder of Archer Aviation.
The company plans to deploy a network of vertiports, with a primary hub at Memorial Coliseum and another at the stadium in Inglewood. Additional points will appear at key transport hubs, including LAX airport. A flight between vertiports will take 10-20 minutes.
However, there are limitations: like most air taxis, Midnight is designed for just four passengers plus a pilot. So capacity will be limited, as will luggage capacity. A significant number of these vehicles will be needed to have any impact on overall passenger traffic.
