Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 did for JRPGs what Baldur's Gate 3 did for CRPGs, says former Dragon Age creative director
Former Dragon Age creative director David Hyder recently compared Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 with Baldur's Gate 3, noting that it can do for the JRPG genre what BG3 did for role-playing games. His words sparked a lively discussion among fans and developers, and Haider himself was surprised by how wide a response his opinion received.
Here's What We Know
In an interview, Haider said that he did not want to humiliate JRPGs or say that they are irrelevant. On the contrary, he noted that a lot of high-quality JRPGs have been released in recent years, for example, Metaphor: ReFantazio, which he also highly appreciated. His comment was more about the fact that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 can become a breakthrough for JRPGs like Baldur's Gate 3 was for the CRPG genre, i.e., it can attract the attention of a new audience and raise the bar for quality for everyone.
Haider himself admitted that he was surprised by how many people interpreted his words in their own way. He emphasised that he is well aware of modern JRPGs and even dreams of his own role-playing game while his new studio Summerfall is completing the development of the roguelike Malys with RPG elements.
He also noted that many publishers are very wrong about whether a game (or genre) will be successful, and Expedition 33 along with Baldur's Gate 3 are good examples of this, because Ubisoft or EA would hardly dare to do such projects, but as we can see, players are enjoying such projects.
