Fiat TRIS: the legendary Ape returns in electric format
Fiat Professional has unveiled the new TRIS electric tricycle for Africa and the Middle East. It is the modern successor to the iconic Piaggio Ape and the first three-wheeled model of the Fiat brand.
Here's What We Know
The name TRIS refers to the number three - the vehicle's design features three wheels, modular architecture and LED lighting with triple lights. Conceptually, TRIS resembles the classic versions of Piaggio Ape, although it is built on a modern platform of a compact electric car Fiat Topolino. Production is set up in Morocco.
The TRIS is only 3.17 metres long and has a turning radius of 3.05 metres, making it ideal for working in dense urban environments. The load platform has a usable area of approximately 2.25m² and is designed to accommodate a standard Euro pallet. The maximum permissible weight is 1,025kg and payload capacity reaches 540kg. Fiat offers three body styles: chassis with cab, flatbed truck and pick-up truck.
The 9 kW (approx. 12 hp) electric motor is powered by a 6.9 kWh lithium-ion battery. The torque is 45 N-metres. The top speed is limited to 45 km/h and the range reaches 90 kilometres (WMTC standard). The TRIS is designed for short-distance urban transport.
Despite its single front wheel design, the TRIS is stable due to its wide rear track, long base and 12-inch wheels. These design features allow safe travelling even with a full load.
TRIS is not just an attempt to play on nostalgia. It is a practical and environmentally friendly solution for small businesses, utilities and metropolitan delivery.
