The Finnish shipyard Rauma Marine Constructions (RMC) has held a launching ceremony for the new class lead corvette Pohjanmaa. The project is being implemented as part of a large-scale Finnish fleet renewal programme that includes the construction of four multifunctional warships.

Here's What We Know

According to the Finnish Defence Forces Logistics Directorate (PVLOGL), the launch of the lead ship of the series took place according to the schedule. Construction of the corvette began in April 2024, and the hull was completed in early February.

"This important project for the Navy is being implemented according to the agreed schedule. These ships will be a key part of the Navy's strike capability for the coming decades, both in national and joint allied defence missions," said Rear Admiral Tuomas Tiilikainen, Commander of the Finnish Navy.

At the same time, the keel of the second corvette of the same class has already been laid at the shipyard. A total of four ships are planned to be built, which will be commissioned in stages in 2027-2029. The programme is expected to be completed by the end of 2029.

The new Pohjanmaa corvettes will replace the outdated Hämeenmaa minesweepers and Rauma missile boats, which will significantly increase the combat capabilities of the fleet.
