Volvo will integrate Google's voice-activated AI assistant Gemini into its cars
Volvo Cars is expanding its co-operation with Google - later this year, the Swedish brand's cars will receive a new AI-based voice assistant, Gemini. It will replace the current Google Assistant in the Android Automotive-based multimedia system, which is already used in all new Volvo models.
Here's What We Know
Gemini will take commands in a more natural, conversational form, allowing drivers to request information from the owner's manual, find out about destinations, send and translate messages, and manage shopping lists - all without having to take their eyes off the road.
Volvo emphasises that such human-centric technologies help reduce the driver's cognitive load and improve driving safety.
Volvo will also be Google's lead partner in developing new Android Automotive features. The brand's cars will soon move from Android 13 to Android 15 - ahead of other manufacturers, for whom the upgrade could be delayed by up to two years.
"We are collaborating on cutting-edge solutions that are shaping the future of connected cars," Volvo's head of software, Alwin Bakkenes, revealed.
Meanwhile, Apple has begun rolling out its new CarPlay Ultra system to production cars and Aston Martin was the first to receive it. The new interface covers all screens in the car. The system works with iPhone 12 and newer models running iOS 18.5 or later.
