MacRumors has published a detailed comparison of the new Sony WH-1000XM6 headphones and Apple AirPods Max.

Headphone comparison

Comfort.

Sony has brought back folding ear cushions in the new WH-1000XM6 model, so the headphones are now easier to fold and more convenient to take with you. The set includes a durable hard-shell case with a magnetic closure that has an internal pocket for a USB-C cable. The AirPods Max, on the other hand, do not fold, and their case has been criticised for its lack of protection and inconvenience.

In terms of weight, Sony wins - the WH-1000XM6 is lighter, so it's more comfortable for long periods of time, although Apple's aluminium design looks more premium.

Sound.

Both models offer excellent sound quality, but the Sony has the advantage of being able to adjust the equaliser via the Sound Connect app, allowing you to fine-tune the sound to your own preferences.

Sony and Apple's Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) is about on par, although AirPods Max may have a slight edge. Transparent mode works well in both headphones, and Sony also has a Background Noise function that plays music quietly in the background to make conversations more comfortable.

Battery life.

Sony WH-1000XM6 lasts up to 30 hours with noise cancellation enabled, and AirPods Max lasts about 20 hours. Both models are charged via USB-C, but AirPods Max are faster to connect and easy to switch between Apple devices.

MacRumors notes that the Sony WH-1000XM6 will suit those looking for lightweight, comfortable headphones with long battery life. And AirPods Max will be the best choice for users who often work with different Apple devices and appreciate stylish design.
