The era of memes in cinema continues: after Minecraft Movie, The Backrooms, a film adaptation of the viral creepypasta, will be released. The project involves world cinema stars, and the director will be the author of the original idea.

Here's What We Know

If anyone doubted before that memes and internet culture are becoming the basis for great cinema, it is now more evident than ever. The Minecraft Movie was literally a collection of memes, and now the next step is the film adaptation of the famous The Backrooms.

The film is based on the viral YouTube series by Kane Parsons, not on the general idea of The Backrooms, which originated on 4chan in 2019. According to Deadline, stars have already joined the project: Chiwetel Ejiofor (known for his role as Solomon Northup in 12 Years a Slave) and Christine Milioti (star of How I Met Your Mother, Fargo, Black Mirror, and Penguin). So far, both actors are only negotiating their participation, and their roles have not been revealed.

The film will be directed by Kane Parsons himself and written by Roberto Patino, who wrote the screenplay for Cut Bank (2014).

The Backrooms is an internet phenomenon that started with a photo of yellow corridors from 4chan. The world of The Backrooms is an eerie liminal space where you can enter as if you have "fallen out" of reality. The idea has become the basis for hundreds of games, but only recently it was established that the photo is a real part of the Hobbytown store in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

Dozens of games about The Backrooms have appeared on Steam in recent years. Most of them are niche projects, but there are also several high-quality Early Access games like Backrooms: Escape Together, Escape the Backrooms, and Backrooms: Apprehension.
