Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra survived 5 hours in an icy river in northern Sweden
Dropping your phone in water is one of the most frightening situations for smartphone owners. However, thanks to their increased durability, modern gadgets are increasingly able to withstand short-term immersions.
However, Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra impressed everyone by withstanding much more - five hours in an icy river in northern Sweden.
Here's What We Know
The incident was reported by Swedish professional guide Mikael Krekula, who was testing echo sounders on the frozen Kaliks River. While working, his Galaxy S23 Ultra accidentally fell out of his glove and into a hole cut in the ice about three metres deep into the icy water. The guide said that at that moment he felt as if he had lost all his photos, documents and applications, because for him this phone was not just a device, but an important work assistant.
Unexpectedly, after almost five hours in the icy water, he managed to get the smartphone out. To do this, Michael drilled eight additional holes in the ice and used improvised tools of branches, a shovel, and a bag to pull out the phone. Despite the extreme conditions, the Galaxy S23 Ultra switched on and worked as usual.
The smartphone has IP68 protection - it can withstand immersion in water to a depth of 1.5 metres for up to 30 minutes - and dust protection. This case shows that Samsung's flagship is able to withstand even conditions that go beyond the official specifications.
