Google is working on a new feature for video applications on the Android Automotive platform that will allow you to automatically switch from video to audio mode while the car is moving.

Here's What We Know

Currently, video apps on Android Automotive are only available when the car is stationary - the video stops as soon as the car starts moving. This limitation is important from a safety perspective, but it is not always convenient, especially for content where video is not critical, such as video podcasts or sports broadcasts.

The innovation will allow users to listen to audio continuously while driving, even if the video stops. In its developer video, Google explains: "If you're watching a live sporting event and then start driving, you'll be able to continue listening to the audio without interruption."

For now, the feature is only available as part of an early access programme on cars running Android 14 and above, and app developers will have to implement it manually.

This update coincides with Google's announcement that it will soon support video apps and browsers on Android Auto, a platform that works via a smartphone on car screens. Presumably, the functionality of the audio mode while driving will appear there as well.

Google recently showed an updated interface for media applications in Android Auto. Now Google has introduced two important innovations. The first is an updated app view with a new "SectionedItemTemplate" template that allows you to divide content into sections. For example, above the album list, you can see a separate block with "Recent Searches".
