"It changed the way I look at the world": actor Christopher Judge tells how his role as Kratos in God of War influenced him
Christopher Judge, the actor who gave voice and movements to the iconic Kratos in the latest God of War installments, said that the collaborative and respectful atmosphere on the set and the game itself "really changed his whole outlook on the world".
Here's What We Know
Speaking at a recent cast panel to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the series, Judge was asked about how his experience in God of War was different from his previous acting jobs. He explained that "it was interesting for me" because in other places there was often a strict hierarchy on set, but on the God of War set, there was none.
"There was no hierarchy. Everyone treated each other with respect, talked to each other like adults and respected the work that everyone was doing."
Judge went on to say that this even applied to the game director, Corey Barlog. "When it was time to shoot, people would come up to Corey with different ideas and he would listen to them. And I just watched and thought, 'He listens to everyone. Wow, that's crazy'."
Judge went on to explain how valuable the experience was for him personally. Noting that he came to the role of Kratos during a difficult time in his life, when he stopped drinking and began attending counselling after receiving two drink-driving charges, he said he began to reflect on "what it means to be a man".
Judge realised that it wasn't about oppressing people, keeping people under control. It's about empowering people, listening to people and making them feel heard. The God of War set was the first place he saw this in practice.
"Every morning, it seemed like everyone wanted to be there, which was something really amazing to me. No one complained. People were happy to be there. It was such a team. It was really the first place I've ever been with that kind of support. And it really changed my whole outlook on the world and what it really means to be a man."
