According to the China Academy of Information and Communication Technology (CAICT), sales of foreign-branded smartphones in China increased slightly in April.

Here's What We Know

A total of 3.52 million foreign-branded smartphones were sold in China in April. This is slightly more than 3.50 million in April last year. Although the growth is small, it is still positive news after a sharp drop in sales by 50% in March.

This data comes amid a difficult second quarter for Apple: the company's revenues in China were down 2% year-on-year. Counterpoint Research also found that iPhone sales fell by 7.7% in the first quarter of 2025.

Growing competition from local brands supported by the government has forced Apple to cut prices. According to Reuters, the largest Chinese online platforms offered discounts of up to 2,530 yuan (approximately USD 350) on new iPhone 16 models.

The sales growth in April, although small, shows that Apple has most likely stopped the decline in an important market and is now starting to stabilise.

As a reminder, Apple executives will not appear on The Talk Show during WWDC 2025. John Gruber announced that Apple declined the invitation to participate in the show. No official reason was given, but many believe that it is related to Gruber's criticism of Apple, especially due to his recent statements about delays in the launch of the updated Siri based on Apple Intelligence.
