WhatsApp will no longer work on iPhone 5s, 6 and 6 Plus from 1 June
Meta has announced that WhatsApp will stop working on some older iPhone models from Sunday, 1 June 2025. This is part of a regular update to the minimum requirements for the app to work.
Here's What We Know
WhatsApp will now only work on devices with iOS 15.1 and higher. This means that owners of iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus will no longer be able to use the messenger. Although some lists also mention the iPhone 6s, 6s Plus, and the first generation iPhone SE, these models support iOS 15.8.4, so they will still work with WhatsApp until the next requirement update.
Here's a summary of the list of models on which WhatsApp will stop working from 1 June 2025:
- iPhone 5s
- iPhone 6
- iPhone 6 Plus
Devices that are still supported, but you should keep an eye out for updates:
- iPhone 6s
- iPhone 6s Plus
- iPhone SE (1st generation)
In addition, WhatsApp is ending support on older Android devices with version 5.0 and below.
These changes may affect many people, as WhatsApp has about 3 billion users worldwide. Even though older phones are no longer state-of-the-art, they are still used as backups or shared with less tech-savvy users.
If you or someone you know has an old iPhone, we recommend updating the operating system to the latest available version or considering a newer device to avoid losing access to the popular messenger.
