The Japanese automaker has confirmed a full unveiling of the new electric crossover in June ahead of the model's production run in Sunderland, UK. In a new video, Nissan showed additional details and angles of the upcoming Leaf.

Here's What We Know

Despite a radically different shape and positioning, the development of the new Leaf was based on the experience of the first and second generations. "The Leaf is an icon for us, one of our key models," said Nissan's head of global product strategy Richard Candler. Since 2010, some 700,000 Leaf units have been sold and have covered more than 28 billion kilometres.

The Leaf, launched in 2010 as one of the first mass-market electric cars, was a hatchback in its first two generations. Now it has become a crossover, following the trend for a taller ride. The model is based on the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance's CMF-EV platform, used in the Nissan Ariya and future Nissan Juke EV.

One of the improvements to the model is aerodynamics. The drag coefficient of the new Leaf is 0.25 compared to 0.28 for the second-generation hatchback. This feature will help achieve the claimed maximum range of 600 kilometres.

Also confirmed is the option of an electrochromic panoramic roof with thermal protection, which eliminates the need for physical curtains and does not restrict headroom in the rear. The Leaf will also get the latest on-board systems on the Car and Connected Service platform on Google's software solutions and advanced driver assistance systems.
