Developer Obsidian Entertainment has listened carefully to complaints about some aspects of the original game's script. Back then, the game was criticised for its overly comedic tone, despite the generally gloomy environment. In an interview with PCGamer, The Outer Worlds 2 game director Brandon Adler admitted that the original game "could be a little bit monotonous at times" in terms of its script and approach to comedy. But the sequel should be different.

Here's What We Know

Adler spoke about the desire to introduce more variety in the script for The Outer Worlds 2. "I want to give the players something new from this so they don't feel like 'Oh, we're just going through the same jokes, the same type of content, the same ideas and themes over and over again,'" he said.

He mentioned that players will notice less silliness in The Outer Worlds 2, and that the game will have a darker tone overall compared to the original. This is largely thanks to Leonard Boyarsky, formerly co-creative director of The Outer Wilds, who has become the sole creative director of the sequel.

"You will notice that there is a slightly less silly, darker tone. That's mostly because of Leonard," Adler said. "It's his style, and so he has more influence on these things. And so I think even the overall story feels like a little bit of a darker take on what's going on there."

However, for players who may be afraid that The Outer Worlds 2 will over-correct by becoming too dark and serious, Adler said that it will still be easy to find humour in the upcoming game.

"We still wanted to make sure that we had a lot of the same feel as the first part, and so when players interact with the different factions, they'll also see that absurd humour that permeates the game," Adler explained. "Hopefully, it will be a little less silly and a lot more absurd."

The Outer Worlds 2 recently received a new trailer, which gave us a glimpse of the game's story. The trailer also confirmed that the RPG will be released on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S on 29 October.

Obsidian and Microsoft have also confirmed that The Outer Worlds 2 will be the first game under the Xbox Game Studios brand to cost $80.
