Never seen before: The Alters surprised critics with unusual mechanics and deep story - the game from the creators of This War of Mine and Frostpunk received high marks
Today is the release of The Alters, an unusual adventure game with survival simulator elements from the creators of This War of Mine and Frostpunk.
11 bit is famous for its complex and unconventional approach to game design and narrative, and according to critics the new game will be a great decoration of the Polish studio's portfolio.
Here's What We Know
Critics and journalists got acquainted with The Alters and published their reviews. Most of the experts were extremely satisfied with the novelty. Not only the technical execution and unusual setting of the game, but also the deep interaction with the Alters were praised.
Recall, the researcher Jan Dolski will find himself alone on a deserted planet and to survive - will begin to create clones of himself. These "alters" will become those people who could have become Jan, if he had made this or that decision in life. All the alters are irreplaceable professionals, their skills will be useful for solving the most difficult tasks, but they all have individual character, habits, psychological problems and views on life, so Ian will be difficult to find a common language with them, but it is necessary to survive.
In total, the gamer can create nine alters, who will be engaged not only in their professional duties, but also participate in forays to the surface of the planet.
As critics note, the most interesting thing in The Alters is the conversations with the clones and their relationships. For example, if the protagonist speaks unflatteringly about his girlfriend, the clone, for whom she is a loving wife, will be offended and will not follow Jan's orders. And if the wishes and requests of "other Yangs" are not taken into account, they may revolt and go against their "main" at all.
The Alters constantly limits the player's time to make decisions and gather resources, but hasty decisions can be costly, so the game is hardly suitable for fans of meditative games.
Journalists praise the game for its thought-provoking story, stunning landscapes of a desert planet, a good balance between serious themes and funny episodes, branching plot and choices that have a huge impact on the course of events.
The Alters gets high marks:
- on Metacritic the game has a score of 84-85 (depending on platform);
- on OpenCritic 86 points with 93% of recommendations.
The Alters will be released on 13 June on MS, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series and will be available immediately on Game Pass.
