The Ukrainian ballistic missile "Sapsan" has successfully passed combat tests and is being put into serial production.

Here's What We Know

In an article published on the Ukrainian portal Liga.net, Valentin Badrak, director of the Centre for Army, Conversion and Disarmament Studies, said that in May 2025, the Ukrainian armed forces used the Sapsan for the first time in combat conditions - it hit a Russian object at a distance of almost 300 km.

After this successful launch, the missile goes into series production and the Ukrainian Ministry of Defence officially confirmed that there are no technical obstacles to mass production

Technical characteristics of the Sapsan:

  • warhead: 480kg (the US PrSM has only 91kg);
  • range: confirmed kill shot from 300 km, but versions up to 600-700 km may be considered;
  • speed: about Mach 5.2 (~6,370 km/h), comparable to the Russian Iskander and faster than the US ATACMS missile (~3 Mach).

This project revives the Sapsan programme started back in the 2000s (frozen in 2013, later renamed Grom-2).

The success of the Sapsan is an unprecedented step in the development of Ukraine's own ballistic power, which is capable of hitting deep objects of enemy infrastructure and in the future providing a deterrent against repeated aggression by Russia.
