The Honda CR-V e:FCEV will be the first hydrogen car to take part in the famous 'Race to the Clouds' - the Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.

Here's What We Know

The car was prepared for the event by engineers from Honda of America Race Team (HART), Honda RD Japan and Honda Racing Corporation USA (HRC US). On 22 June, the CR-V e:FCEV will tackle a challenging 20km mountain course with 156 corners. At the wheel is Pikes Peak winner, two-time Formula Drift champion and HRC US driver Dai Yoshihara.

The 2025 production CR-V e:FCEV will compete in the "exhibition class" with no changes to the zero-emissions powertrain. This vehicle features Honda's second-generation fuel cell system, an electric motor, a 17.7 kW⋅h battery and two hydrogen cylinders. Modifications for the race: the suspension is lowered by 2.5 cm, racing brake pads, lightweight 18-inch rims and Yokohama Advan A052 tyres are fitted. A racing seat and a safety cage are also fitted in place of the regular driver's seat.

The CR-V e:FCEV is hand-assembled at the Honda Performance Manufacturing Centre in Marysville, Ohio. It is the only hydrogen passenger vehicle produced in America. It is also the first vehicle to combine hydrogen fuel cells with plug-in hybrid technology.

The Pikes Peak Hill Climb is called the "Race to the Clouds" because of the 4,301 metre summit in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. It is one of America's oldest motorsport events since 1916. Drivers from all over the world go for the best time on a gruelling mountain course that starts at 2,862 metres above sea level.

The CR-V e:FCEV 2025 has a range of 435 kilometres and can also travel up to 47 kilometres in all-electric mode. The model is currently available for leasing in California.
