As part of The Witcher 3's 10th anniversary celebrations, CD Projekt RED spoke to GamesRadar about what made their quests so special. Maturity was named as the main component, and this is not surprising, as most of the developers, according to quest designer Paweł Sasko, were aged 30-40. But there is one more, perhaps more unexpected factor: their Polish nationality.

Here's What We Know

"I would say that we, as Poles, are much more negative than Western societies," Sasko said. "We tend to see the glass as half empty rather than half full. Part of creating mature entertainment is realising that not everything in life is going to be great. We're all going to have terrible shit happen to us."

And there is certainly a lot of horrible shit in The Witcher 3. Sasko compared these elements of horror in CDPR's RPG to the moment when you come to terms with the fact that your parents are going to die one day.

It's not fair to always show and paint the world in a positive light

"You can't prevent your parents from dying," he continued. "You can't prevent the fact that maybe the pet you spent 15 years of your life with has cancer. You can't completely prevent it. But the point is to be grateful for everything you've experienced. Even in this bloody dystopian horror world of Cyberpunk, or this dark noir world of The Witcher, there are good people. There are good moments. There are friendships. There is love! I think it's an ambition to encourage people to see that, and it may sound a little bit gloomy when I say it, but I want to make sure that that ray of sunshine is visible in our work."

As a reminder, The Witcher 4 is becoming console-oriented: CD Projekt RED The Witcher 4 is becoming console-oriented: CD Projekt RED targets stable 60 frames for PlayStation and Xbox first for PlayStation and Xbox.
