Warner Bros. Games is going for a reboot: more focus on Mortal Kombat, Harry Potter, DC and Game of Thrones
Big changes are on the horizon for the gaming division of Warner Bros. Games. The company is reviewing its priorities to focus on four key franchises that generate stable revenue and have a huge fan base. From now on, all efforts will be directed to the development of the Mortal Kombat, Harry Potter, DC, and Game of Thrones game worlds.
Here's What We Know
Details about this large-scale reorganisation, which covered the entire company, come from Variety. The changes reportedly include a management reshuffle, but importantly, will not result in any employee layoffs or the departure of any executives. Instead, three key figures at Warner Bros. Games have been promoted as the gaming division refocuses on its most successful brands.
The head of Warner Bros. Games Montreal studio head Yves Lachance will now take on the role of senior vice president of development, with responsibility for games based on the Harry Potter and Game of Thrones franchises. Meanwhile, Shaun Himmerick from NetherRealm Studios will take on a similar role, leading the development of Mortal Kombat and DC Universe projects. Finally, Steven Flenory from Warner Bros. Games New York has been promoted to senior vice president of central technology and services, leading gaming and publishing technology, customer service, quality control, and user research.
"Our company is home to some of the biggest franchises in the world, and we are optimising our team structure to develop long-term franchise roadmaps to delight players and fans of Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, Mortal Kombat and DC games," said J.B. Perrette, CEO of Global Streaming Games, in a statement. "We are very fortunate to have a strong staff of development and technology talent, and Yves, Sean and Steven are respected leaders with excellent track records in their respective fields. I look forward to working closely with them and the team as we strive to create the best games for our key franchises."
Time will tell how the restructuring of Warner Bros. Games restructuring will affect the company after its troubled start to 2025. It all started on 23 January, when it was announced that CEO David Haddad was leaving the company after notable failures, including the troubled launches of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and MultiVersus. Plans to close the latter came just a week later, and an even bigger blow came in February when Warner Bros. Games announced plans to close Monolith Productions, Player First Games, and Warner Bros. San Diego along with the cancellation of its Wonder Woman game.
