Kratos' return to Greece is delayed: the new God of War game will be released no earlier than 2026
Many God of War fans have always dreamed of returning to the place where it all began: to Mount Olympus, Ares, and the chaotic beginnings of the Spartan's story. And according to rumours, their wishes have been heard, but there is one small hitch.
Here's What We Know
Recently, these hopes have been rekindled thanks to numerous reports about a brand new God of War project set in Greece. Unlike the remasters that are also actively discussed in the community, this is supposed to be a completely new game, smaller in scale, different in style, and possibly exploring parts of Kratos' past that we've never seen before. However, if you were hoping to play it this year, we have some bad news.
According to renowned insider and journalist Jeff Grubb, the upcoming Greek-themed God of War game is no longer targeting a 2025 release. Speaking during the latest episode of his regular video podcast Game Mess, Gubb said that the game was internally delayed and is now expected to release in 2026.
This new God of War game is not a full-blown AAA project like Ragnarök. Instead, it's a smaller side project with a different style of gameplay, which is rumoured to be 2.5D and inspired by Metroidvania. Some leaks have even mentioned that the events may take place before Kratos became the Ghost of Sparta and may even feature his brother Deimos.
