Germany's Mahle has unveiled its first mid-drive, the M40. Prior to this, the company only made X-series motor-wheels.

Here's What We Know

The new M40 is already available for order. It weighs 2.5kg and delivers up to 105Nm of torque and 850W of peak power. An electric mountain bike (eMTB) with this motor should be able to pull uphill on loose ground as well as on rocky slopes.

The system supports several useful functions:

  • Motor Dynamic Overrun reduces the effects of engine braking
  • Hill Brake helps keep the bike on a steep hill so it doesn't roll backwards when you stop.

Powering the whole thing is a 48-volt battery, available in two versions:

  • 534Wh iM5
  • the 800Wh iM8.

The larger and heavier battery provides up to 150 kilometres of range or 2,500 metres of altitude gain. The batteries are interchangeable and can be swapped directly on the trip - if you take a spare, it's easy to replace on the go. Fast charging is also supported.

The M series will be developed further and will complement the existing X20, X30 and XS range, which is mainly focused on city and road e-bikes. The M40, on the other hand, is for those who choose forest trails, mountain serpentines and are not afraid of mud under their wheels.
