MG to bring Tesla Model Y rival to Europe
Chinese brand MG has announced the European presentation of a new electric crossover, which will compete with the popular Tesla Model Y. The premiere will take place on 10 July at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.
Here's What We Know
A year and a half ago at the Geneva Motor Show MG showed a luxury sub-brand IM. At that time it was already clear that IM cars will appear in Europe sooner or later. It looks like that time has come.
The teaser photo shows the silhouette of the car, which was shown in Geneva as IM LS6. In Australia, this model is already sold under the name IM6 (photo below).
If we focus on the Australian market, then in Europe the novelty will be called MG IM6. However, on the back of the Australian version there is still an inscription "MG Motors". Perhaps, for Europe, marketers will change something and just put the usual MG logo.
In any case, this is an interesting newcomer in a saturated segment. The crossover is about 4.9 metres long and will compete with the Tesla Model Y and Ford Mustang Mach-E.
On paper, the IM6 looks interesting. Several battery types are available for the model: there are more affordable LFP batteries and advanced NMCs that support fast charging at nearly 400 kilowatts of power. According to Australian figures, with a 100 kWh battery, the IM6 can travel up to 555 kilometres on the WLTP cycle.
The motor range starts with a rear-wheel drive version with 294 hp. And the most powerful modification produces as much as 787 hp and has an all-wheel drive system.
An interesting detail: the IM sub-brand in China already has a sedan L6 with a solid-state battery - this is the next generation technology, which promises even greater capacity and safety. Perhaps such batteries will eventually appear in MG's European models as well.
