Tesla has delivered the first new driverless Model Y straight to the customer's doorstep
Tesla said it has delivered the TeslaModelY fully autonomously from its Gigafactory in Austin without a driver or remote operator - the car travelled through highways, suburbs and residential areas before parking at a customer's home. This happened on 27 June 2025 - a day earlier than Ilon Musk's previously announced launch.
Here's What We Know
Tesla is bragging that it's the first time it has delivered a car from factory to customer completely autonomously. In a video posted on X (same Twitter, but with an upgrade), the Model Y drives out of the Gigafactory in Austin, USA, follows a highway, passes through suburbs, residential neighbourhoods and parks at a customer's home. And all this - without a living soul in the cabin.

Elon Musk added pathos, as always, by announcing that this was the first ever delivery of a car on public roads without people or even remote operators. According to him, the auto was travelling completely on its own.
But let's remind Musk that Waymo has been racing its driverless robots on highways in Phoenix, San Francisco and Los Angeles for a year now. True, only for the company's employees so far. So Tesla isn't the first, though it's certainly in the top.
This "debut" looks more important than the infamous Tesla robotaxis, which managed to make mistakes almost immediately after the start: crossed the double solid line, braked in the middle of the road for no reason - like after the first party. Back then, there were insurers with an emergency stop button in the cabin.
This time, according to the company, there were no such fuses. The conclusion is that Full Self-Driving is slowly getting closer to that future where autos don't need looking after. But as long as people are in the cabin - Tesla is still insuring.
Context to understand
This manoeuvre is more of a PR case than a real game changer. But if Tesla proves that its cars can drive autonomously without supervision and in the presence of passengers, it will be a new level. For now, the company is balancing "trust but verify."
