Some fans of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach have encountered an unusual problem for PlayStation 5. The Kojima Production game is causing a basic PlayStation 5 to overheat. Is this a problem with the game itself, or did someone just not care to clean their console?

Here's What We Know

A post on Reddit describes the problem in detail:

"I'm playing the game on a basic PS5 and overall it works great - the graphics are stunning and I had no issues during normal gameplay. But as soon as I pause the game and the map screen comes up, the fan suddenly starts running at full blast and I get an overheating warning. This is strange because everything else works smoothly, even during long gaming sessions. But the moment I open the map and start planning a route, the fan goes crazy and I get an overheating warning. I recently cleaned the console and it's in a well-ventilated area, so airflow shouldn't be an issue."

A recently released patch doesn't seem to have solved the problem, and this particular user isn't the only one who appears to have experienced it. "I have the exact same problem," one player complains. "I'm using the digital version of PS5. The fans only start screaming in the map menu."

The problem exists on the basic PS5, while the PS5 Pro copes better. It may be worth mentioning that some parts of Europe and America have been experiencing particularly warm weather recently, which may also be a factor.

However, it is likely that the cause is a memory leak or other technical issue. The menu seems to be running at an unlocked frame rate, which could be the reason why the fans are going into overdrive and causing the console to overheat.

One user suggested sending a detailed bug report to the developer Kojima Productions so that they have more information to work with and can release a fix quickly. This seems like a reasonable idea.
