Microsoft disables password auto-remembering in Authenticator - what to do?
From July 2025, Microsoft Authenticator will no longer support password autofill, and in August it will completely remove all stored passwords and payment data. This is required to comply with the current security model - the industry evolution is to abandon passwords due to the risks of phishing and leaks. Users are advised to export data in advance and switch to Microsoft Edge or other password managers.
Here's What We Know
- In June 2025, the ability to add new passwords to Authenticator was discontinued
- In July 2025, Authenticator's autofill feature will be completely disabled
- In August 2025, all saved passwords and payment data will be completely removed from the app
Microsoft says that the saved data is synchronised with Microsoft Account and will be available in Microsoft Edge. Users who don't want to use Edge are advised to export passwords (in CSV) and transfer them to third-party services like Bitwarden, 1Password, Google Password Manager, iCloud Keychain.
Authenticator will continue to support passwords, so logins using PIN, biometrics, and two-factor authentication. Just make sure the app remains enabled as a password provider.
What users need to do
- Export passwords before July-August - via Authenticator settings
- Install Microsoft Edge and set it to autofill, or choose an alternative manager
- Ensure Authenticator remains enabled as an access key provider if you have set up access keys for your Microsoft account
Authenticator will continue to support passwords, so logins using PINs, biometrics, and two-factor authentication will work. Just make sure the app remains enabled as a password provider.
