Ferrari has listened to owners and has come up with a solution for those annoyed by the touch-sensitive buttons on the steering wheel. Now on the Roma, Purosangue, 296, SF90 and 12Cilindri models it is possible to install physical controls - the same as on the new Amalfi coupe.

Here's What We Know

Criticism of the touch panels on the steering wheel has long been voiced: owners complained of excessive sensitivity and inconvenience in everyday use. In response, Ferrari has introduced a redesigned interface, first tested on the track version of the 296 Speciale and then implemented in the production Amalfi. This refinement can now also be fitted to cars already in service.

According to the head of product development Gianmaria Fulgenzi, it is not necessary to change the whole steering wheel - it is enough to replace the centre part. Installation is possible at authorised dealers, without the need to send the car back to the factory in Italy. After the replacement, only a short test drive will be required for customisation.

Why tried to do away with physical buttons on the steering wheel? As marketing director Enrico Galliera explained, the idea originally came about when creating the SF90 hybrid supercar - Ferrari wanted the fastest and most modern smartphone-inspired interface possible. But the experiment failed. Instead of the "hands on the wheel, eyes on the road" principle, sportscar owners have to look more at the steering wheel.

Ferrari owners with touchpads can already sign up for service. True, modernisation is likely to be expensive.
