Blumhouse admits: we underestimated M3GAN - 2.0 failed at the box office
The sequel to fashion horror "M3GAN" - psychological and comedic action film "M3GAN 2.0" - failed to live up to expectations: collections started at $10.2 million against a forecast of $45 million. Blumhouse Studios head Jason Blum honestly admitted the mistakes and factors that cost the sequel success.
Details
Blumhouse founder Jason Blum said he was "in pain all weekend" after the disappointing results of "M3GAN 2.0" - the studio's fourth failure of the year after "Wolf Man" and "The Woman in the Yard".
The key reasons for the failure according to Bloom:
- Overestimation of M3GAN's popularity. Bloom compared it to Superman, but forgot that it was the horror-comedy that fans loved. The move to action blurs the character's personality.
- The move from January to the summer season. Opting for a "high stakes" game instead of "less competition and motivation" - including against the blockbuster F1: The Movie. The film ended up grossing only $10.2 million instead of the expected $45 million.
- Lack of time for the director. The change in genre required a perfect pitch, but Gerard Johnston wasn't given time to refine it - which affected the result.
Nevertheless, Bloom is convinced: the brand is not dead - "M3GAN 2.0" has received positive reviews from critics (Entertainment Weekly expressed excitement), and even ideas for sequels and spin-offs (like "M3GAN 3000" in the style of "Mad Max") are being discussed.
