Xpeng has unveiled its "Tesla Model killer" for just $27,000 - the G7 crossover vehicle
Chinese electric car manufacturer Xpeng has officially unveiled its new G7 crossover. The model aims to compete directly with the Tesla Model Y and the fresh Xiaomi YU7. With a starting price of 195,800 yuan ($27,325), the G7 collected 10,000 pre-orders in just 46 minutes.
Here's What We Know
The G7 is a rear-wheel-drive electric car with a single motor producing 296 hp (218 kW) and accelerating to 100 km/h in 6.5 seconds. The range is 602 to 702 kilometres CLTC, depending on the battery (68.5 or 80.8 kWh) and wheels. Both drives are categorised as LFP (lithium-iron-phosphate).

Ultra-fast charging with 5C technology can top up to 436 kilometres of range in 10 minutes. The G7 also supports the V2L function - powering external devices up to 6kW.
The body is designed in the style of the second generation "X Face" - with a narrow LED strip along the front, no imitation grille and spectacular Star Ring taillights. The aerodynamic drag coefficient is 0.238, slightly higher than the Model Y (0.230).
The interior of the G7 is minimalistic: there are almost no physical buttons, all electronics control is concentrated in the 15.6-inch touchscreen of the on-board system running on Snapdragon 8295 chipset. The main feature is the 87-inch AR-HUD from Huawei with projection of navigation and assistants on the windscreen.
The luggage compartment holds 819 litres and increases to 2,277 litres with the seats folded, plus 120 litres under the raised floor. Front boot volume is 42 litres. In the cabin, there are 20 speakers, a panoramic sunroof, two 50W wireless chargers, an 8-inch rear control screen, a folding table and split climate control.
No gadget or car presentation happens without mentioning AI nowadays. Usually it's voice assistants with inbuilt ChatGPT or automated driving systems, but in the case of the Xpeng G7, AI is mentioned in relation to the adaptive suspension. The company says the G7 outperforms the Tesla Model Y and Mercedes GLE in terms of smoothness.
However, the G7 will also have its own "autopilot": the Ultra version is equipped with two Turing AI chips with a processing power of 2,250 TOPS, supporting Level 3 autonomous driving - full functionality will be activated over-the-air (OTA) by the end of 2025, subject to regulatory approval. Standard versions use a pair of Nvidia Orin-X chips with 508 TOPS.
