Rust's audience on Steam has surpassed 20 million players: the popular survival simulator will continue to be actively updated

Rust is one of the most successful survival simulators in the history of the genre. The game debuted in early access in 2013 and still enjoys huge popularity and sets all new attendance records.

Facepunch studio published a video dedicated to the development of Rust in the first half of 2025, in which they shared several important news about the past, present and future of the game.

Here's What We Know

The authors reported that more than 20 million copies of Rust have been sold on Steam alone, and in addition, the game is available on PlayStation and Xbox, where it is also very popular.

Survival simulator has gained more than 1 million reviews, 87% of which are positive. Such attention and love of the public is provided largely by regular content updates, which since the release of Rust has already released 380!

As for future plans, Facepunch Studios promises the following innovations:

  • a hardcore mode will be redesigned in August, and the game will feature "several long-awaited improvements;
  • Later in 2025, the Naval Update will be released, which will include the ability to build boats. They will receive detailed customisation and allow for water-based battles.
  • There are plans to add new animals and improve AI behaviour;
  • Rust is preparing a collaboration with Warhammer and other events, but the developer does not disclose details about them.
