TikTok breaks the deadlock: a new US version of the app and a possible sale to Oracle
TikTok is preparing to unveil a new version of the app - "M2" - specifically for the US. This is a move to possibly sell the US segment activity to a non-Chinese investor (Oracle) ahead of the upcoming ban in September.
Here's What We Know
TikTok is developing a new, US version of the app, dubbed M2, after the internal designation of the current M app. It is scheduled to be released on the US App Store on 5 September 2025. The original app will remain available until March 2026 to allow users time to transition.
The reason is the necessary fulfilment of the requirements of the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act: ByteDance must either sell the US segment of TikTok or face a ban. A deal with Oracle and other investors is almost agreed upon, but awaits approval from the Chinese government .
Why it matters
- Path to "diversification": M2 is an attempt to isolate US users and meet national security requirements
- Oracle as a major player: the company can be the lead partner in the deal while providing discounted cloud solutions to TikTok and guaranteeing data control
- Politics + technology: the decision is not only about security, but also about US-China trade negotiations, where TikTok has become an additional "trade lever"
What happens to users
Changing the app is mandatory. Users in the US will switch to M2 after 5 September, the old app will work until March 2026. Then access will cease.
Data Concerns. The new format is being created with the expectation that all storage and servers will be in the US - under Oracle's control.
Users may leave. With the platform change, there could be audience churn - some users may not migrate to M2 in time.
