Mac sales grew 21.4% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2025, while the overall PC market posted only 6.5% growth, IDC reports. That's tangible growth - Apple ranked fourth among the top PC makers with a 9.1% market share thanks to shipments of 6.2 million Macs.

Here's What We Know

Excitement ahead of possible US tariffs had manufacturers scrambling to get ahead of the curve: PCs were sent to warehouses in anticipation of higher prices, and as a result, the US market other than saturation barely grew at all (0% growth in Q2), while the rest of the region posted +9%.

According to IDC's Jean Philippe Bouchard, shipments caught up the pace in advance to beat tariffs. However, inventory balances and uncertain demand after the increase are reasons to prepare for sales and promotions in the third quarter.

For Apple, success is a combination of a successful model, vertical integration (its chips) and a loyal audience. Many competitors will have to raise prices or face zero margins, and Apple can hold supply steady.

Going counterclockwise is Dell (-3%) and modest growth HP (+3.2%), Asus (+16.7%) and Lenovo (+15.2%) remain in the plus side but behind Mac in terms of momentum.
