JLR will start fitting Pirelli tyres made from renewable materials on its cars
Jaguar Land Rover will be the first carmaker to use tyres containing more than 70% renewable and recycled materials as standard. The new Pirelli P Zero tyres, developed specifically for JLR, will be available later this year on new Range Rover models with 22-inch wheels as standard equipment. Later the novelty will appear on other brands of the company.
Here's What We Know
The tyres use silica, which is derived from rice husk, a by-product of rice processing. The rubber compound also uses vegetable resins made from agricultural waste and used cooking oils, replacing traditional petroleum-based components.
The compound includes recycled carbon black from recycled old tyres, as well as recycled steel to increase stiffness and stability. All this reduces dependence on primary natural resources without compromising on performance.
The tyres also contain natural rubber with FSC certification, confirming the sustainable and ethical origin of the raw materials. This is a continuation of JLR's initiative announced last year to introduce FSC-certified tyres across its entire range.
The company emphasises that all recycled and virgin components will have verified third-party certification. In the future, JLR and Pirelli aim to increase the proportion of renewable and recycled materials in tyres to 100%.
