Were we facing an era without "sunny-haired" heroines with swords? Not so - the official trailer for Red Sonja has already picked up the comic book legend for the second time. Matilda Lutz, the star of Revenge, appears as a warrior who conquers arenas and gathers an army of outcasts to overthrow the tyrants Draygan and his wife Annisia.

Directed by M. J. Bassett - now imagine a very "bloody" - she has also directed Solomon Kane and Ash vs Evil Dead. The screenplay was written by Tasha Huo, who voiced "Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft".

The trailer features gorgeous battles, gladiatorial clans, terrifying monsters and, attention, Ruda Sona's iconic chain "bikini success", which... actually protects nothing but the mood of the crowd ().

Why it's interesting

After 14 years of Conan's silence, Red Sonja returns in style: without compromise and with blood. For fans of the 1985 original, it's a sip of retro sci-fi - but in a modern way and with a touch of irony.

When and where.

The film premieres in the US on 15 August 2025, with a digital release on 29 August.

Context.

"Red Sonja is a 1985 fantasy adventure film directed by Richard Fleischer and based on the Marvel comic book series about the Conan the Entertainer. The film stars Brigitte Nielsen in the title role and Arnold Schwarzenegger as the warrior Calidor, a character who was supposed to replace Conan due to legal restrictions. The plot tells the story of Red Sonja, who, after the brutal massacre of her family, receives heroic powers from the goddess Havat and seeks revenge on Queen Hedren (Sandahl Bergman) for the murder and theft of the magical Talisman. The film was shot in Italy and is considered to be part of the "swords and sorcery" of the 80s cinema era, and despite criticism for its plot and acting, it has become a cult film among fans of the genre.

The remake project has gone through numerous freezes: back in 2008, Robert Rodriguez wanted to restart Sonia with Rose McGowan, then Bryan Singer took over the directorship... and the author was "thrown out" after scandals. In 2021, M. J. Bassett brought the product to the finish line, and in the summer of 2022, filming began in Bulgaria and Greece, where active battles took place.

If you still had doubts, you should go to the sword-and-sorcery fantasy film - the trailer says more than words. Sonya goes, attacks, stabs, and rebels - and at the same time sarcastically comments on her chain "captivity". This film is like a "vintage sword", only painted bright red.
