It's official: Google will merge Chrome OS and Android into a universal operating system
Google has confirmed what has long been rumoured - Android and Chrome OS for PCs will be merged into a single operating system.
Here's What We Know
About the creation of a universal OS reported the president of the Android ecosystem Sameer Samat in an interview with the portal TechRadar.
According to him, Chrome OS will cease to be an independent system - Google computers will move to a special version of Android with a modified interface. The platform will get support for Linux applications, browser extensions, multitasking and external displays. Google also plans to integrate Gemini's AI services into laptops, tablets and foldable devices.
With this decision, Google aims to strengthen its position in the tablet market, where Android and Chrome OS are inferior to iPadOS in terms of functionality. This merger will simplify development and speed up the introduction of new features.
Samir Samat noted that the idea of a merger has been discussed for about a decade, but only now has received official confirmation. It is not yet known when the new platform will be released, but Google is actively studying how users interact with laptops to make it as convenient and competitive as possible.
