After nearly a decade of waiting, Sony has officially unveiled the new RX1R III, a compact camera with a 61-megapixel full frame Exmor R sensor, BIONZ XR processor and built-in AI autofocus capable of tracking faces, bodies, heads, animals and transport objects.

Here's What We Know

At the heart of the device is the classic ZEISS Sonnar T 35mm F2* prime lens, enhanced with Step Crop technology, which allows you to switch between 35/50/70mm focal lengths digitally - without changing lenses. This turns the compact into a versatile tool suitable for street photography, portraits and work travel.

The camera also gets 4K video, a 0.7x XGA OLED electronic viewfinder, an improved battery (up to 300 shots without recharging), a waterproof magnesium body and a minimalist fixed-screen design. All this in a compact body weighing around 500g - a pocket studio for photographers.

Sony isn't so much challenging smartphones as neatly returning the focus to cameras as standalone devices. The RX1R III is a statement in favour of compactness without compromise, albeit for a lot of money.
