HBO has officially confirmed - the third season of "The Last of Us" will be released in 2027, the company's head Casey Bloys told Variety. The sequel should be expected in the first half of 2027 .

Here's What We Know

Showrunner Craig Mazin is still mulling over whether it will be one long season or two shorter ones. Key actors remain with the series - Bella Ramsey (Ellie), Caitlin Dever (Abby), and Isabela Merced (Dina) among others - with no high-profile casting changes.

Season 2 ended with a tense finale that shifts the focus to Abby. That explains the anticipation - the writers want to delve deeper into her story.

By the way, co-creator of the original game and series Neil Druckmann has ended his involvement in the HBO project, returning to Rossi and work on Naughty Dog's new blockbuster Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. However, Bloys assures: he still has Mazin's "solid" plan behind him - and the quality of the show will not suffer.

Given the pause between seasons 1 and 2, a third season coming out in 2027 sounds expected. But if Mazin opts for the "one long" option, the wait will be longer than fans are hoping for.
